Liquid Vitamins from Liquid Vitality
Ingredients: Lecithin
Lecithin: As little as twenty years ago, nutritionists dismissed lecithin and choline as mere "health food supplements" possessing no obvious nutritional purpose, because they had observed no maladies or conditions caused by their deficiency. They concluded that the human body must produce them in sufficient quantities so as to negate the need for supplementation.
Research into the function and availability of choline and lecithin has shown that they play an important partsupporting liver and cardiovascular function. Further research suggests that choline (which makes up about 13% of lecithin, by weight) supports improved physical performance and even memory.
The reason for the turnaround may not be due to poor research technique as much as it is from recent changes in diet. Because lecithin is is a fat, less and less can be found in the typical western diet of late. Consider that the best sources of lecithin are eggs and meat, and you can see why a low-fat/low-cholesterol diet could bring lecithin deficiencies to light.
Lecithin seems to reduce the risk of cardidovascular disease by contributing cholesterol-lowering polyunsaturated fats, inhibiting intestinal absorption of cholesterol, increasing the excretion of cholesterol and bile acids, and by affecting lipoprotein profiles in a positive way.
One study showed that 32 people with high cholesterol took 10.5 g of lecithin for one month. At the end of the trial, their average total cholesterol and triglycerides decreased by an impressive one-third, LDLs decreased by 38 percent and HDLs increased by 46 percent. The researchers concluded by saying "lecithin ... should be administered for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis."
Lecithin is abundant in nerve cell membranes and is required for nerve growth and function.
Additionally, choline helps generate methyl groups, which are important in activating DNA.
Because of these and other functions, choline is widely recognized as important in brain and mental development of both fetus and infant. Not surprisingly, choline in the mother's bloodstream has been concentrated 14-fold by the time it reaches the fetus and is concentrated more than 100-fold in mother's milk.
